Description: For the Friday BSD 2025 workshop, Mr Banning will be teaching a traditional Indonesian knife with a human-shaped handle, called a Majapahit Keris. The workshop will cover forging only; grinding and finishing of the knife will be left to the students. A picture is attached.
He will provide all necessary materials. Most likely will be 7/8" or 1" round 5160.
The book Iron Ancestors by Theo Alkema has pictures and descriptions of the historical artifacts his design is based on. The BGCM has a copy of this book for reference. Cost of the one day workshop is an additional $125, over the cost of BSD.
Prerequisites: You must have taken Blacksmithing 101 or have equivalent experience equal to at least 16 hours of forging time.
Registration Options - To register, please contact Ted McNett at president@bgcmonline.org. You must confirm space is available in the class with Ted. All classes are limited to 8 students. There must be a minimum of 4 students registered to hold a class.
Required Essentials - You will need to bring safety glasses, lunch, and wear *non-synthetic clothing. Natural fiber long pants, short or long-sleeved shirt, closed toed shoes (preferably leather) that can get dirty are required. All other tools and equipment are provided.
*Synthetic materials can melt and cause severe burns.
