Learn to Temper High Carbon Steel. The student will make several chisels and punches and then harden or temper them according to their intended use.

SUPER BS101 - Beginner Blacksmithing (4 DAY EVENT)
Description - In this extended 4-day version of BS-101, students will learn blacksmithing safety, setting up of their own shop, evaluating equipment, an overview of forge welding, an overview of working with high carbon and tool steels, finishes and blacksmithing resources. Students will learn to make: Various types of hooks, leaves, leaf hook, coal rake, forge poker, drip can handle, forge & heat treat a scribe. Wed & Thurs will be open for students to try making items which fall within their skill level & time limits. Class time 9AM-5PM each day.

Join Blacksmiths’ Guild of the Potomac for our Annual Spring Fling Conference. Demonstrators are Phillip Heath and Ken Schwartz from Colonial Williamsburg. Richard Sullivan from the Williamsburg Gun Shop will also be demonstrating the completion of a Brown Bessie rifle.

The 35th annual blacksmith days event for the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland. One of this year’s demonstrators is Ted Banning. The other demonstrator is being worked out now. Check out frequently for updates. Activities include contests, tailgating, Iron-in-the-hat drawings, Forging Contests, Live Auction and more! This is a save the date notification. Forge Welding for Beginners (Weekend) Cancelled

Description: Learn basic forge welding techniques and make a small project incorporating forge welds. Forge welding or Fire Welding is a technique for joining two pieces of iron or steel by heating them in a forge and then fusing them together with hammer blows. Class time 9am-5pm each day. PREREQUISITE: BS 101 or equivalent.

2nd annual Selmer Ironworks Hammer-In
This year’s demonstrator is Fred Crist. Forging demonstrations, tailgating sales, raffle! Donate a forged critter to the raffle. Vote with tickets for best animal, head, insect, grotesque, etc. Item donations offset the cost of the event.
This event is free to the public. Bring a handmade item for Iron In the Hat. Item donations offset the cost of the event. Know someone interested in blacksmithing, but they’ve never made anything to donate? Bring them along and buy some extra tickets. Items do not have to be forged ironwork. Share your art with the community.
The demonstration will be inside. Tailgating will be outside, weather permitting.

2024 Holiday Party
Please join us on November 23rd at the Bear Branch Nature Center for our annual holiday party. Setup for the event begins at 4pm with dinner shortly after 5pm. The guild will provide main dishes, drinks and tableware. We are asking that you bring a favorite side dish or dessert.

Knife Making
In this class, you will learn to forge, heat treat, grind, handle, and finish a camping/utility knife. The knife will be made from 1075 steel and have a wooden handle with a full tang construction. All materials will be provided.
Prerequisites: You must have taken Blacksmithing 101, or have equivalent experience equal to at least 16 hours of forging time.
